MPR Athletes Go Big In Moscow World Cup Sambo

MPR AT THE WORLD CUP MOSCOW

Team USA’s first day of competition at the Kharlampiev Cup (World Cup). Our sole competitor today was Patrick Sabatini. He fought 68kg combat Sambo. He fought his way to the gold medal match versus Russia. Pat is a beast and battled with one of the world’s best, coming up short (not due to lack of effort, for sure). He also got a wee taste of some headbutts ( yes, they’re legal in combat sambo). Pat’s silver medal is the highest medal of a male USA athlete at this event.

Saturday March 25th, Johnson Jajoute competed in Combat Sambo, Jamie Driver and Catherine Marino competed in sport Sambo, at the Kharlampiev Cup (World Cup). This is Jamie and Catherine’s 1st ever Sambo competition. Talk about jumping into the fire. Jamie’s 1st match was against the reigning world champion, from Georgia. Catherine started with a very tough competitor, from Moldova. Both battled valiantly. At the end of the day, Jamie walked away with a bronze after defeating a tough competitor out of Turkmenistan, in the bronze medal match. Catherine battled hard and came out with great experience.

Johnson battled very hard losing to the eventual gold medalist from Belarus, in his opening match. He ended up fighting for bronze and came up just short. On the ground, it almost appeared like he may have choked his opponent out, but ref stood them up. He ended up 5th. He will surely come back stronger. Johnson previously won bronze at this same event, as well as gold at Pan Ams. There are photos here of Jamie being interviewed, signing autographs, and posing for photos with children. All of our were approached by tons of children and adults, for photos and autographs, as well as interviews. The attention our athletes earned was truly earned.

USA SAMBO WINS AT SCOTLANDS PRESIDENTS CUP

evanchmBUCKS FIGHTERS WIN BIG IN SCOTLAND

Last Saturday on the 24th of September 4 members of the USA Sambo Team stepped on the mats in Edinburgh at Scotland’s prestigious President’s Cup. The President’s Cup is a unique Sambo tournament previously held in the UK which features Sambo athletes representing 22 countries from around the world. One portion of the tournament was a team Sambo sports style grappling event featuring teams of 5 men and 2 women which all competed against each other. In this event the US didn’t have any athletes participate and the Russian team unsurprisingly was victorious earning the President’s Cup.

Bristol’s Patrick Sabatini and Neshaminy’s Evan Chmieleski put on amazing performances finishing the competition undefeated with gold medals while Johnson Jajoute and Langhorne’s Erik Purcell drew 2 top 3 World Championship finishers and ended up with bronze medals in their efforts. Patrick Sabatini was also named most exciting competitor of the event and given a special plaque and gifts from the owner of M1 Global which is one of the largest mixed martial arts promotions in the world. Erik Purcell also did double duty coaching the 3 athletes while competing himself. USA Sambo head coach Mikhail Kozitskiy also made the trip to oversee the athletes preparation and provide valuable coaching to all of the athletes. top left – Evan Chmieleski, bottom left – Patrick Sabatini, top right – Johnson Jajoute, bottom right – Erik Purcell

princessofwhalesIn attendance at the event and at the press conference was Her Royal Highness Princess Katarina of Whales. Her Highness spent a generous amount of the time meeting with the US Team and presenting the medals at the President’s Cup. As you can imagine this was the first time the Americans met royalty. Overall the American athletes fought their hearts out earning the respect of everyone in attendance.

MPR SENDS 3 TO KAZAKHSTAN FOR USA SAMBO

We headed off to Kazakhstan representing USA Sambo to compete in the 20th Annual Kazakhstan International Invitational.  This tournament was host to about 30 teams from different countries around the world.  It was a long journey to get there and home, but it was worth the effort just to compete along side of such amazing athletes.  We sent 2 coaches and 4 athletes to represent the United States.  Our complete trip started May 5th and we arrived home May 11th.  I can honestly say everyone in Kazakhstan treated the American team like rockstars.  We met so many people and took probably hundreds of pictures with the locals.
